Bodega del Abad is a superb winery in the region of Bierzo, north-west Spain. It was founded in 2000 with a hi-tech winery, and now has 35 hectares of vines split between the red Mencía grape and the white Godello. The region enjoys a unique microclimate, resulting from the combination of both Atlantic and Mediterranean continental climate, while the steep slate-soiled hillsides are perfect for the production of high-quality grapes.
This wine is from vineyards in Villafranca del Bierzo and Valtuille de Arriba at 500-650 metres above sea level. The vines’ average age is around 35 years, and their roots penetrate into mineral-rich soils of quartz and slate. The wine is vinified and aged in stainless steel.
A supple, medium-bodied red with juicy, aromatic wild dark berries. Low tannins and fresh acidity alongside pure, peppery primary fruit make this a geat value every day wine of real versatility which could even benefit from a slight chill before serving. Drink with charcuterie or grilled meats.
